Tintagel Colombo - Colombo

Tintagel is a unique and private hotel, situated in the heart of Colombo’s most elite neighbourhood. Offering 10 individually designed suites with all modern amenities and services, Tintagel is housed in a stunning heritage structure of national importance that was previously home to three of Sri Lanka’s political leaders.
In the uptight neighbourhoods of Rosmeald Place, the Tintagel Colombo hotel is like a heritage of Sri Lanka’s modern history. Old presidential refuge, this majestic establishment is hiding an exotic and timeless setting behind its white walls. In 2005, this national treasure opens a new chapter in its epic adventure thanks to designer Shant Fernando, bringing back within the walls the fast and glory of the old, prestigious and dynastic era.
In the heart of this small haven, high ceilings are smoothly hidden behind in the curves of the arches and immense wooden columns. As the architecture awakes in us some vague desires, the colours (white, ebony and red) give birth to flamboyant combinations. As an inveterate globetrotter, Shant Fernando brings back to life different landscapes of the world through a very eclectic set of furniture. Sofas from Portugal, Flamingo chandeliers, give pureness and serenity to the rooms.
The unavoidable and mythic Alfresco takes you the high point of elegance. In this authentic and stylish restaurant, the visitor can enjoy international and innovative dishes on antique chairs and sparkling trays. In the early hours of the night, the candles will end the darkness from under the parasols pour an unforgettable and romantic dinner.

Casa Colombo - Bambalapitiya

A place of trendy version of colonial exotism, in the heart of Bambalapitiya town. Although our eyes are astonished by the large iron gate in front of Galle Road, it is only the shield of the most hip hotel of Colombo. Once destined to destruction, the Casa Colombo is back to its days of glory thanks to its creative and genius owner Lalin Jinasena. Eccentric and staggering, this 2-century-old Moresque castle brings back to life the charms of past times in a custom-made art deco. A tonic alternative to the city’s hassle, an artisanal jewel made in Sri Lanka.'
Padded in the captivating white walls, the army of carved arks and moulded ceiling rest like ultimate witnesses of ancient times. In each corner, colonial antiquities rival with the minimalism of iron and wooden furniture. And consequently, what you have is a flamboyant and upscale design worthy of Austin Power’s psychedelic universe, a mix of profusion, groovy colours and neon lightings. In the retro-chic rooms, your soul finally rests in a haven mounted with silky tints and raw silk curtains.
When you are not in the middle of a motorbike escapade on this lively and coloured island, relax in the shades of the mango trees, reflected by the water from the swimming pool. Under the starlit sky, the ZAZA outdoor tapas restaurant will offer you all the treasures from Asia. You should not miss the opportunity to test your knowledge on teas in a small tour around the exotic world of flavours on the fresh lawn of the T Republique.
Rates: from 71€ for the traveler suite and 177€ for the royal suite.

Sigiriya – The 8th wonder of the World

Sigiriya is a major archaeological site in North Central Sri Lanka. At Sigiriya we find the ruins of an ancient palace complex built during the reign of King Kasyapa. It has been ascribed by UNESCO as one of the seven World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka. Probably the most recognizable feature in Sri Lanka is the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya. Originally built in 477 A.D. as an impregnable fortress and palace, Sigiriya was later used as a monastic refuge in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The rock dramatically rises 200 meters above the surrounding plains and it is a wonder to imagine how they managed to carry up the materials necessary for its construction. At the base lies the remains of the royal rock and water gardens in what once was the lush pleasure gardens of the royalty. The most significant feature of the Rock would have been the Lion staircase leading to the palace garden on the summit. Lion staircase leading to the palace garden on the summit of Sigiriya Rock. Based on the ideas described in some of the graffiti, this Lion staircase could be visualised as a gigantic figure towering majestically against the granite cliff, facing north, bright coloured, and awe-inspiring. Built in the 5 century AC this magnificent complex of geometrically laid gardens, pools, fountains (still working today) as well as oldest surviving murals of maidens has been a palace of the King Kasyapa.
The pleasure garden of the western side of the rock is studded with ponds, islets, promenades and pavilions. Some underground and surface drainage systems have been discovered during excavations. The wall abutting the moat encircling the fortress is one of the most arresting features. The full original article of this can be found here.

Queen's Hotel - Kandy

The Queen’s Hotel is considered today as a historic building to be conserved and held for all time as a part of the history of Sri Lanka’s Central Province. The Queen’s was originally a Governors Mansion with a small structure of buildings constructed to house troops. This was later to become the main complex of the Ceylon Riffle Regiment.
Today the Queen's Hotel which is one of Kandy’s prime properties set on an extent of 217.5 perches of land is one of the finest and grandest architectural buildings of its kind in Kandy, along with its 54 spacious rooms, and emphasis on its superb outlets the Queen's Hotel boasts of the King Narendrasinghe Hall (Mini Ball Room), the Queen of Hearts restaurant, the Lord Mountbatten Lounge Bar, Royal Ball Room and The Pub Royal, the latter being the only British Pub in the city that offers service with true colonial flavour.
What’s significant about Queen's Hotel is, its location both in the city and in Splendid surroundings alongside the Kandy Lake, and the world renowned“Temple of the Tooth Relic of the Buddha”. Every country has its pageants and festivals and so does Kandy which has the world famous “Kandy Esala Perahera Pageant” which is held annually. The Gallery Café

The Gallery Café is situated in the center of the city of Colombo yet it remains a beautiful quiet haven to all our patrons. One enters the building down a paved driveway with temple trees and large urns along each side. A doorman dressed in a black and white striped batik Paradise Road sarong greets you as you wonder past showcases containing art works of the current exhibition.
A view across a long pond filled with striking purple nil manel , Sri Lanka's national flower, continues through the latticed doors towards a giant cement urn, which sits at the boundary wall of the cafe.
The Art Gallery is situated at the entrance to the Café. Exhibitions display works of mostly local artists, changing every three weeks. On the side of this courtyard is The Gallery Shop. Open from 10am to 10:30pm, the shop is ideal for finding a quick last minute gift and is filled with a good selection of Paradise Road merchandise.

Photos from travellers ....

"The Island of Sri Lanka is a small universe; it contains as many variations of culture, scenery, and climate as some countries a dozen times its size . . . I find it hard to believe that there is any country which scores so highly in all departments - which has so many advantages and so few disadvantages." -- Sir Arthur C Clarke

A Special Thank goes to Photographer Priyantha Bandara at http://farcry77.deviantart.com/. And some other Photographers who i could not find their names.
